Looking back, I can't imagine where I'd be today if I hadn't discovered rock music and the guitar.
It all started when I was 12 years old. I was in middle school when my best friend at the time took me to a local music store to buy himself a new CD that had just come out.
By that time, I had never once bought a CD in my life and after seeing my friends new cd collection, I got curious.
"Dude, WHO are these bands and what kind of music is this??", I asked.
After introducing me to classic rock bands such as Led Zeppelin, Guns N Roses, Metallica and modern day bands like Blink 182, Green Day, and the Red Hot Chili Peppers- my life forever changed.
"WHAT!? These bands have been around since I was born??". I could't believe that I had never heard of these bands before let alone this type of music…
He then went on to tell me how his parents turned him on to some of the bands while tv channels such as MTV and VH1 introduced him to the others.
Holy crap I thought, why haven't my parents told me about this whole rock n roll thing… I knew I couldn't watch MTV and VH1 because we didn't have cable at the time but why didn't my parents introduce me to these cool rock bands…
Looking back at my childhood, my parents never introduced me to any type of genre of music other than classical, and the only CD's I remember seeing in their collection was some old disco compilation followed by a Beach Boys album. I guess The Beach Boys stuff was pretty cool but this whole rock n roll thing was way cooler!
Needless to say- from then on, I knew that my life would never be the same again.
So here I was 12 years old, discovering rock n roll for the first time in my life.
What I felt listening to all those bands that day is hard to put into words. For the first time in my life, I felt like I was somebody important and had a purpose in this world. I felt… happy… extremely happy… like pure, absolute bliss happy.
As the weeks went on, my newfound love for rock music started to shape who I was. The more I listened to rock, the more curious I got about wanting to start learning the guitar. So I begged my parents everyday for about a month and eventually got them to buy me a guitar and put me in guitar lessons.
I started taking guitar lessons at a local music store and soon after started my first rock band with two of my best friends. Playing guitar was all I could think about in school and I couldn't wait to get home each day to practice.
The guitar was my life at this point. I would look at guitar magazines all day in school, practice when I got home, and would jam with my band every weekend.
As the months went on, I started to see myself in a different light. I wasn't the nerdy/shy kid who played video games all day anymore, I was the cool kid who listened to cool rock band music and played the coolest instrument known to mankind- the guitar!
I started to dress and act differently, and as a result people around me started to treat me better. When people started treating me better, my outlook in life started getting more positive.
I broke out of my shell more and started to develop my own personality and character. In summary, I became more CONFIDENT.
Thanks to the guitar, this new found confidence began to affect other areas of my life such as my relationships with friends and family, my social skills, and even my involvement in school and sports! (listening to music really pumped me up and motivated me to excel in these areas).
To conclude, if it wasn't for the guitar and discovering rock music… I don't know how my life would have turned out today.
